The Nature of Freedom
Thought-prints off the beaten track.
Hello, I’m Atulya, and better known over at The Mud Home, where I document my forays into natural building. I’ve lived off-grid for a good 12 years. At one time it was in a mud hut in Turkey, after that I tried the van life, and last of all I sheltered in a stone hut in Spain while renovating an old barn. The underpinning reason has always been freedom. But what is freedom? Is it simply about severing ourselves from a corrupt system and raising our fingers at the establishment? Is it free power and water? Is it being able to say whatever we want? Or move wherever we want? Is it about options? Or power? Or sitting in the lotus position with a beatific smile on our faces?
The concept of freedom has become hugely politicised these past years. When a concept enters the political, it’s no longer discussed philosophically. Suddenly everything becomes about aligning with a set of views on the right or the left. This series of essays is a personal expedition that aims to reach beyond the stifling polarities of our times. There probably won’t be clear answers, and definitely no one-fits-all solutions. They are thought paths that create maps unique to each of us, and lead to who knows where?
